TROPICAL STORM DORIAN… ADVISORY NUMBER 15

TROPICAL STORM WARNING DISCONTINUED FOR SAINT LUCIA…

At 8:00 am today the center of Tropical Storm Dorian was located near 14.0 North… 61.2 West or about 15 miles or 25 km west northwest of Saint Lucia.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph or 85 km/h, with higher gusts.  Slow strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Dorian could be near hurricane strength when it approaches Puerto Rico on Wednesday.  Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles or 75 kilometers from the center.

Tropical Storm Dorian is moving towards the west-northwest or 290 degrees at 13 mph or 20 km/h.  A turn toward the northwest is expected on Wednesday.  On the forecast track, the center of Dorian is expected to move across the Windward Islands and into the eastern Caribbean Sea during the next several hours.

A Tropical Storm warning remains in effect for Martinique and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Puerto Rico. A Tropical storm watch is in effect for Dominica, Grenada and its Dependencies, Saba, St. Eustatius, Puerto Rico and sections of Dominican Republic.

Dorian is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches (75 to 150 mm), with possible isolated maximum amounts of 10 inches (250 mm) along its path. Moderate to heavy showers are still possible over Saint Lucia and motorists and residents in areas prone to flooding and landslides should continue to be vigilant and exercise caution.

Swells generated by Dorian will be affecting portions of the Lesser Antilles tonight and tomorrow.  Small craft around Saint Lucia are strongly advised against venturing far from port. Residents are also advised to stay away from beaches and coastal areas.
