Local capacity for managing emergency shelters in Saint Lucia has been enhanced following a training workshop for shelter managers held on August 17 and 18, 2015 at the conference room of the National Skills Development Centre (NSDC) in Vieux Fort.
Twenty-one persons from various District Disaster Committees and Religious Organizations benefitted from this two-day training workshop, which sought to provide designated shelters managers with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively perform required duties for the operational management of emergency shelters.
The course covered a number of relevant areas, including Risk Management, Shelter Selection, Shelter Administration and Operations and Problem Solving. Participants also received information about the National Shelter Policy and the Emergency Shelter Plan for Saint Lucia. In addition, a shelter simulation exercise was held at the conclusion of the workshop to test the level of knowledge gathered by participants as well as to assess the application of techniques learnt.
According to the Director of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), Mrs. Velda Joseph,
“This initiative is part of ongoing efforts by NEMO to strengthen existing community systems and structures towards building resilient communities throughout Saint Lucia.”
Mrs. Joseph says the training course will be replicated in other districts across the island, thereby facilitating the organization of trained teams to manage the islands shelters when activated.
The facilitators for the workshop were Mrs. Velda Joseph, Director, NEMO and Ms. Lindy Eristhee, Chairperson of the Vieux Fort South District Disaster Committee.
Financial support for the activity was provided by the United States Agency for International Development / Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID / OFDA). |
