Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, has called on citizens to be on the alert as a weather system approaches the Lesser Antilles.
Tropical Storm Danny is the fourth named weather system in the Atlantic Ocean for 2015. As of 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, the system was 1,595 miles east of Saint Lucia and the Windward Islands, moving at about 12 miles per hour.
Forecasters anticipate that the system could strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday, August 20, 2015. The National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Florida, advises that the storm could make landfall in about seven days at its current speed.
The Prime Minister pointed out that in spite of a relatively placid hurricane season thus far, Saint Lucians must stay alert and prepared.
Said Dr. Anthony,
"We are nearly at the halfway point of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season, and so far we have been blessed. The approaching system could change that.
“Danny, though a storm at the moment, is a salutary reminder that we must not be complacent. Rather, we must remain vigilant. We must remain vigilant not only for this system, but throughout the season and beyond. Ensure that you monitor closely the development of Tropical Storm Danny.
"Earlier this month, I had the privilege of chairing a meeting of the National Emergency Management Advisory Committee (NEMAC), which includes Permanent Secretaries of the relevant Ministries, the Chief Engineer, Fire and Police Chiefs, Saint Lucia Red Cross and the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authorities. God willing, they will not be needed, but the Committee stands ready to respond should a disaster strike."
The storm can be monitored on www.nhc.noaa.gov. Previous storms (Ana, Bill and Claudette) bypassed the Caribbean entirely. As many as 10 named storms have been predicted for 2015. The hurricane season ends on 30 November.
